Making impact in Health Care with AI

AI-podden with Max Gordon, an orthopedic surgeon and Associate professor at Karolinska Institute

The AI Swede of the year (2023) is Max Gordon, and he is also our (returning) guest in this episode of AI-podden! Max is an orthopedic surgeon and Associate professor at Karolinska Institute.

Max Gordon shares with us his story of applying AI in Healthcare, how he got into it, where he started, and how he dealt with acquiring data, testing, building the user interface, and having a prototype transforming into a product at Danderyd Hospital where he does his clinical work.

Max tells us about his work on treating patients with fractures by using AI. He emphasizes that the problem for him here is not to identify if there is a fracture or not, but to actually make a decision of what action he should take. There are hundreds of ways a doctor could try to approach a fracture, and getting help from an AI system to make the best decisions is invaluable.

We also discuss the issue of regulations in health care due to privacy, and Max describes how they managed to handle patient data very smoothly and the process of building an IA product from scratch and putting the product in production where it contributes to helping doctors in their work.
